what is “the work of God?”

I meet a lot of folks who either outright say they want to be involved in God’s work or that they are hopeful to see the work of God come alive in their church family and in their community. I do, too. It certainly should be a hunger and a longing for anyone who follows Jesus.

It’s seems like most people speak of “the work of God” longingly but in actuality treat it like some etherial concept that is a touch out of reach. It might help if we clearly defined it.

It actually helps that Jesus did.

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
[John 6:29, NASB]

So based on Jesus’ teaching in John 6, it is clear that what God is at work doing is engaging people to believe in the One Who was sent. How is He doing that? Stay with me here, cause it’s a crazy idea.

He is doing that through the followers of the Sent One (Jesus). You and me. Crazy isn’t it.

“As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”
[-Jesus in John 20:21, NLT]

So, the bottom line is this – if you really want to see “the work of God” then surrender to “the work of God.”

If you claim to be a follower of Jesus but the mission of your life is anything besides living as a letter from the Sent One in hopes that people will come to believe and know and follow the Sent One and then live sent lives themselves, then you are not serious about wanting to see “the work of God.”

The Sent One is now sending us. Are you just going to church, or are you being the church? Are you living a selfish, feed-me Christian life, or are you living a beyond-me SENT life?

May we live sent daily. And may the work of God come alive in the cities where we live.
